Percy Saves Kerry’s Home

The animals and humans gathered in Daisy Hill for their big meeting to save the Koala’s homes. One of Percy’s friends slipped Percy a big mango.

Percy’s Friend: For later, in case you need to control the humans.

Percy: No, I can’t throw mangos at the humans anymore. We must negotiate with the humans; fighting will not work anymore, if we lose, the Koalas will be homeless.

Percy’s Friend: I have never seen you on the third branch before Percy. You can get a good shot from here. Why negotiate with the humans? That is not your way, throw the mango at them!

Percy: Well, it is my way now. I promised my sister Holly I would try to negotiate not fight with the humans, so the koalas do not lose their homes.

Percy’s friend climbed down the tree, grumbling to himself. ‘I was hoping for a fight. I’m sure we could beat those humans.’

Kerry, the green koala, climbed the tree and sat next to Percy. ‘I see you are climbing higher up the tree. Good to see Percy. Are you ready now to negotiate?

Percy held out his shaking hand to Kerry, ‘It is now or never’.

Percy: Attention animals and humans; we are here today to help Kerry and her Koala friends stay here in Daisy Hill because this is their homes. Humans and animals have a housing problem, and we need to work together to solve it.

Human 1: Percy, you are holding a mango. Are you going to throw it at us like you usually do?

It was given to me, but I wouldn’t do that. Here, catch, you hold it. I want to talk to you all.

Human 2: I am glad to see you will not use it. I was going to leave when I saw the mango. I will speak with you and the other Possums and Koalas now that you won’t fight.

Percy: Thank you. All we want is to live in our trees and be left alone, but all the humans are moving into our areas and pushing us out, like we are outlaws.

Human 1: I have been so impressed to see the change in you Percy, that I am going to suggest we try living in peace for three months, let the Koalas stay here, continue talking about making it their permanent homes. But in other areas like your home, Percy, we still need to speak more about it.

Percy: I will agree with you, Mr Human. One place at a time, then one state at a time!

The humans all agreed the koalas could live in Daisy Hill permanently but would get together another time to negotiate about other animal housing.

Percy: Kerry, I’ve saved your trees!

Kerry hugged Percy. She was so happy, but sad Percy still had to do many negotiations to save his own house and other animals’ homes as well.

Percy: Thank you humans for co-operating with us. Bye for now and stay safe.

Holly: I’m proud of you Percy. You saved the Koalas trees, and you never got angry once.

Percy: Yes, but we still need to negotiate to save our own homes. Our neighbour is still difficult to get along with.

Holly: As we said before, one place at a time, one state at a time, until we have saved all the homes of our animals. Keep up the good work, Percy. Let’s go home now, we have some big fat mangos ready for us to eat.

Percy: They are the ones I was saving to throw at the humans, I am glad I didn’t do it now.
