I am a social worker. There is not much I have not heard before, but must admit, your story is different. Here is your opportunity to elaborate on what you told me this morning. Do you want to start with the man who is tied to the stairs?

‘Yes,’ said Carol, staring at the floor, unable to speak for a couple of seconds. I want justice for women, and saw an opportunity to get rid of at least one killer.

Carol walked into Sky’s office, shut the door behind her, and sat down. ‘I am in a lot of trouble. I captured the serial killer, put him in Kim and Jack’s house without their permission; he has been there for days. The police are around, checking on us. They just know something is wrong. I am not sure how I am going to get that man out of there. Kim and Jack are in a terrible state, as I have involved them. Especially Jack, you know what he is like.

‘It is your turn to give the briefing, Senior Sergeant Chris,’ said Inspector Ruth as she spun her keys in her hands.

Thank you, Ruth, now settle down, settle down, everyone. Here are the findings for case 006 at this stage.

  • The four-wheel drive sitting in Kim and Jack’s driveway belongs to Carol, the nurse.
  • Kim and Jack did not go to work for several days, and neither has Carol; this is out of character for Kim. She loves her job.
  • There is something very suspicious going on in their house that we are currently investigating.

‘Yes,’ said Colin, ‘part of the house is a different colour to the rest of the house;’ everyone laughed.

  • I have searched the house, but have found nothing so far, but I believe there is a connection to the killings….

‘Yep,’ answered Jack as he almost dropped his mobile.

‘Is my wife at your place?’ asked an agitated voice.

Yes, Derek, she is with us and drunk.

‘Why is Carol drunk this time of day? Put her on the phone.’ Jack handed his mobile to Carol, who was on the verge of tears, not knowing if she was going to tell her husband what had happened to her.

‘I’m worried sick. Why have you not answered the phone, Carol?’ asked her husband, Derek.

‘I lost it,’ said Carol.

Lost it! How can you lose it? It is always stuck to your ear……

After the phone call with her husband, Carol continued speaking to Jack.

‘I intend to make the serial killer feel like he is out of control, and feel the pain,’ said Carol.

Listen to me carefully, Carol, if he is not out of here by the weekend, I am going to call the cops.

All in good time, Jack, he will pay for what he has done.

You have not told your husband about how you captured an alleged serial killer, have you?

I will tell Derek when I am ready. I will deal with the serial killer before the cops get to find out what is happening, and you will not get caught with him here.

‘What is behind this wall?’ asked Senior Sergeant Chris as he walked down the hallway that led to the small room with

What is the story behind this small room with the winding stairs that lead to an unopened ceiling, Kim?

I’ve already told you, Jack. Fred came over one day complaining of being bored, so I asked him to renovate the pokey small room. When Carol brought the alleged serial killer here, I thought it was an ideal place to hide him.

Senior Sergeant Chris seemed to look at this part of the house as though something was not quite right, like there was more to it; it was almost as though he knew there was something behind the wall. Even though I carried on about the different coloured wall, knocked on it, and walked into the garden to distract him, he appeared to be suspicious. It’s only a matter of time till we get found out.

‘What is behind this wall?’ asked Senior Sergeant Chris as he walked down the hallway that led to the small room with the winding stairs, knocking on the wall on his way down.

‘What is what?’ asked Jack.

What is behind the wall?

‘It is a wall,’ said Jack, and knocked on the wall himself. ‘See,’ and moved away into the garden to distract Senior Sergeant Chris.

There is something odd about that wall, Jack. Tell me about it.

How observant you are Senior Sergeant Chris. It’s painted a different colour from the rest of the house. I started painting it, then lost interest.

Kim walked towards Jack and Senior Sergeant Chris. ‘Hey Mr Pig, you turned everything over in my house, but you forgot a piece of dust. I don’t suppose you will be back to pick it up,’ said Kim, the beautiful buxom blond.

Missy…

Don’t you dare call me Missy, you arrogant pig!

Jack pulled Kim back. ‘You can’t afford to be smart mouth with that cop. Remember who we tied up to the winding staircase…

Jack picked up the alleged serial killer and threw him over his shoulder and carried him towards the back of the basement. ‘Not that way,’ said Kim. ‘this way.’ Jack and Carol followed Kim down the hallway into a small room neither of them had ever seen before, despite Carol being at the house many times, and Jack living there. In the small room, winding stairs led to the roof, but there was no opening to the roof. The manhole was over towards the left of the stairs, too far to reach from the stairs. It made no sense to have a stairway that led to the roof that had no opening. The stairs served no purpose.

If we let the alleged killer go, he will kill others. If we tell the police, they will want to know why we have not reported it immediately. Why are we stalling Jack? Why? The longer Carol keeps him here, the worse it will be for everyone. Why did she not just call the cops once she captured him?
